Larger Rooms Without Hammer & Nails

L

It's done with "Smoke and Mirrors"

Professional decorators use a number of methods to make rooms appear more spacious. They really don't use smoke and mirrors but they do use mirrors and other techniques. Some of which you already know and others which you may not. However, you can do all of them on your own. Naturally they may be a little more skilled at it, but "nothing ventured, nothing gained."

#1   Start with the simple and most obvious

Survey how much furniture in the room. Start thinking what pieces could be removed. This is very difficult for any because you are so used to seeing the room as it presently is. Decorators are not handicapped by this so you must think out of the box. Try removing some and see if it looks larger. Occasionally you can merely switch a piece in one room with a piece in another room. If your asking why you're doing this, just remember:

The more spacious a home feels the more money buyers will pay. It's well worth making your rooms appear larger.

A small room with a large wood coffee table. Either remove the table or replace with a glass top coffee table.

Important tip - do not put the removed furniture in other rooms or the garage, for then they will look crowed or smaller. It will be self-defeating. Send the furniture to storage.

#2   Change Paint Colors

Lighter colors will cause a room to appear larger than darker colors. Naturally fresh paint adds excitement.
Homes with a number of small rooms. Keep the color theme constant.

Do not have a different color paint in each room. The same goes for carpeting. Tie all the rooms together with a common color and carpet scheme. The home will look larger, rather than broke up in little pieces.

#3   Mirrors can double the size of the room

Add a large mirror opposite a window or glass slider door and the room will appear larger. There is a little truth in the old “it’s all smoke and mirrors” tales.  What rooms do you have that have a wall opposite a window that would benefit from a large mirror. Mirroring an entire wall dramatically changes a rooms size.

Mirrors in a homes entry are beneficial in several ways. They make the entry appear brighter, larger and may also reflect a beautiful piece of staging, such as a striking floral arrangement. A small mirror usually is not sufficient to create a prominent statement of class or luxury. Large framed mirrors often look great in these settings.
